HMS Gannet - General Photographs

The two photos above show the forward mess deck and galley area.  Many of the crew lived here as well as the food being cooked.  Compare this with the Captains cabin, below.  However, there would have been a shaft passing directly through which was located where the glass plate has been inserted into the deck.  The propellor was hoisted out of the water when not in use and would have been hoisted into the shaft which ran from the deck to the deckhead (ceiling for the non-nautical reader!).

The next two photographs are taken from the Poop Deck (from where the Captain and officers commanded the ship) and are facing forward along the Main Deck.

Next are two pictures of some of the guns carried by Gannet - a replica 64 pound muzzle loader (three of which were carried on traversers so they could be swivelled to fire on either die) and an original 5 inch breech loading gun two of which were carried on the port and starboard sides of the Poop Deck.

As well as Sail the ship could also be propelled by a single boliered steam engine.  A propellor was lowered and secured into position, a funnel raised and the ship proceed under sail, steam or a combination of both.  Generally sail would be used as the stock of coal that could be carried was limited.  The next two photographs show the boiler room and funnel - now permanently set in the elevated position.

The final two pictures show the port side Noredfelt Machine Gun (a four barrel device) and a view of the main deck, along the port side looking towards the stern.  In the latter view the awning is not in position so it is possible to see some of the rigging detail.
